3 Days from Marrakech to Merzouga

Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

We depart early from Marrakech, crossing the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), the highest road pass in Morocco. Along the way, we’ll enjoy spectacular views, Berber villages nestled in the mountains, and lush green valleys.

Our first major stop is at the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This adobe fortress has served as a filming location for movies such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones. After a guided tour through its narrow passages, we head to Ouarzazate, known as “the gateway to the desert” and home to the largest film studios in Africa.

We continue towards the Dades Valley, passing through the impressive Valley of the Roses and the Berber villages of Skoura and Kalaat M’Gouna. Dinner and overnight stay in a charming riad with mountain views.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, we set out for the imposing Todra Gorges, a natural canyon with vertical walls reaching up to 300 meters high. It’s an ideal place for a walk, taking photos, and enjoying the refreshing stream winding through the rocks.

We then continue toward the Sahara, passing through the town of Erfoud, known for its fossils, and Rissani, with its authentic local souk. Finally, we arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi desert.

Here, we trade our vehicle for camels and embark on a magical sunset camel trek, crossing the dunes as the sun sets on the horizon. We spend the night in a luxury Berber camp, enjoying a traditional dinner, music under the stars, and the peaceful silence of the desert.

Day 3: Merzouga – Draa Valley – Marrakech

We rise early to witness the unforgettable spectacle of sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast and a refreshing shower, we return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4 to resume our journey back to Marrakech.

We travel through the picturesque Draa Valley, filled with thousands of palm trees and ancient kasbahs, one of the longest and greenest valleys in Morocco. We cross the Atlas Mountains once again and arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon, where our adventure comes to an end.
