Day 5: Fez – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

Journey to the Sahara: From Atlas Mountains to Desert Dunes

Our desert adventure begins as we travel south through Morocco’s diverse landscapes. The route takes us through the fragrant cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, where we’ll make our first stop in charming Ifrane. With its alpine architecture and crisp mountain air, this town earns its nickname as “Morocco’s Switzerland.”

Continuing our drive, we pause in Azrou to walk among ancient cedar trees and observe playful Barbary macaques in their natural habitat. The road then winds through Midelt, a peaceful town surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, before descending into the breathtaking Ziz Valley. Here, endless palm groves create a lush green ribbon through the arid landscape.

As afternoon fades, we reach our final destination – Merzouga, the golden gateway to the Sahara. As the sun begins its descent, we mount gentle camels for a magical ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes. The shifting sands glow fiery orange in the sunset light before we arrive at our traditional Berber camp, where a night of stargazing and desert hospitality awaits under the vast Saharan sky.

Day 6: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

After an unforgettable sunrise, we return to Merzouga by camel. We visit Rissani, cradle of the Alawite dynasty and traditional market.

We continue to the Todra Gorges, a paradise for hikers and photographers. The high rock walls rising up to 300 meters create an imposing landscape.

We followed the route to the beautiful Dades Valley, known as the “valley of a thousand kasbahs.” Overnight in a riad overlooking the valley.

Day 7: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – High Atlas – Marrakech

We leave the valley to visit Ouarzazate, the “Gateway to the Desert,” and the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, an adobe fortress declared a World Heritage Site, the setting for films such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

We cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) in the High Atlas Mountains, with spectacular landscapes, until we reach Marrakech, the red city.
